Extract of sample "Support for Technological Literacy in Public Schools"

I am writing this letter to affirm my strong support for the implementation of technological literacy in public schools within the US and to encourage you to endorseour cause. Technological literacy is the capability of a person, working individually or with others, to effectively use technological tools to control, integrate, analyze and create, and transfer information. The world is in an advanced stage of technological advancement. Almost every aspect of human life in the modern world from health care, work, communication, education, and leisure has integrated technology in one aspect or another (ASME, 2002).

The present technological landscape necessitates an introduction of a curriculum that imparts technological knowledge to students in all aspects of the learning process. Technological literacy will impart several benefits to students and the whole country alike. The learning process has employed technology in various ways. Imparting technological knowledge on students will enable them to appreciate the technology, and use it appropriately to gain knowledge. Technologically literate students will be more productive, capable and knowledgeable members of the American society and labor force (ITEA, 2000).

Such a situation will lead to unprecedented advancements in research, industry, science, mathematics and medicine. Having technological proficiency will improve the quality of life across all members of society. Acquiring technological literacy will narrow the digital divide between members of society especially those who undertook technical subjects and those with less technical abilities (ITEA, 2003). Technological literacy improves the decision-making process of people. Technological literacy will help people make better decisions as workers, leaders, and consumers.

People will have enough knowledge to put new and existing technology to good use. As consumers, people will have the knowledge to choose between devices thereby making smart choices. In the workforce, technological literacy will help in operating and maintaining machinery and equipment leading to economic growth (NAENRC, 2002). Leaders in governance, business and media will have the information to understand the impact of their decisions on the technological situation. The leaders will very likely implement technological development in ways that will maximize the advantages to the country.

Students will understand the complex and dynamic nature of the world and help in improving it after completing education. Students will also have the ability to comprehend how the application of technology is necessary for social, cultural and economic improvement. As you review my proposal, I trust that you will apply your vast wisdom and perception to this vital issue. Further consultation and dialogue regarding the matter will be highly appreciated.
