Extract of sample "Exhilarating Ride on the Surface of the River"

The sun glistens off of the water with such brilliance we need to shield our eyes with glasses to keep them from aching. The river is wide and the current is slow along this stretch, but we know we shouldn’t be fooled. The river was always full of surprises so being careless, even on such a beautiful summer day was a bad idea. We all stood there for a few moments enjoying the peace and quiet. My friends Kevin, Brian, Matt and Brenden knew that the quiet wouldn’t last long. But the loss of quiet would soon be replaced with the excitement of riding our wave runners and being towed by the ski boat.

In some ways I wish we could just enjoy the quiet for a large portion of the day. The water is quietly lapping along the rocky beach on which we stand. A hawk, circling high above, cries and plunges toward its prey. In a moment it is lost to our sight behind the tree line on the other bank. Brenden suggest we get going. The silence is broken and soon five wave runners are tearing up the once still surface of the river. The engines whine so loudly that our laughter is drowned out. Hopping wakes is a risky proposition when laughter is involved.

Sooner or later, a mouthful of river water with just the slightest hint of oil from the wave runner engine is sure to be swallowed. It’s a small price to pay for the exhilarating ride on the surface of the river. Out of gas and nearly out of time, we dry off in the sun on the rocky beach where we started. The smooth pebbles act as a proper mattress for a quick nap after a day of fun on the river. The wave runners have been loaded back on the trucks and the silence has returned.
