Student name Course title Tutor Date Performance in service management layer Service management layer has services that are defined in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Business capabilities and IT management services are defined in this layer. Service management layer covers several aspects of management and monitoring of applications, services, processes, middleware, and infrastructure ad service tool for information technology in business management. Service management can be classified into two major categories: runtime and design time. There are activities which operated in the runtime which cause design time activities to run. The design time activities are those that involve development and maintenance lifecycle. Service management normally focuses more on Registry, Repository, Metamodel, policy management and enforcement, and operational concepts of the service infrastructure. This paper will focus on service management layer performance. Service management layer in one of the horizontal layers that describes the business functionality in the SOA. It gives a level of abstraction where underlying networks has information model that is independent of any aspects based on the technology and topology. This layer therefore focuses on the monitoring, control and management of information flow between different end points. Service access point or service end point is a point of interaction between a service provider and a service within a given address. The performance of service layer can be illustrated by looking at the key areas that service management concentrates most which is the Registry, Repository, Metamodel, policy management and enforcement, and operational services. Service management includes Information technology processes, services and software for managing and monitoring network infrastructure in ensuring that an enterprise has good governance practices such as COBIT aligned with the goals of the business. A service oriented architecture is a collection of practices for planning and managing IT resources and manpower to come up with support services. Organization used different software platforms in coming up support services for their organizations before the standardized model architecture was set up. Web services, database servers and application servers all used different platforms in offering management services. There was a need to come up with a standard service management layer. Service management widely deals with the following concepts. Business management is one of the aspect of service management layer that deals with transaction management, business management process and business activity monitoring. The second aspect of service management layer is systems management this function involves web service monitoring, version control, web service dependencies and depreciation. Enterprise security and policy management is another aspect of service layer. This involves identity access management, key management, run-time guidance, design-time governance, content-Aware Networking. Service Management layers The following are layers of service management layer; 1. Composite management layer 2. Process management layer 3. Middleware management layer 4. Infrastructure management layer 5. Service oriented architecture governance IT governance Consumer/application management Composite applications such as application-service integration management Process management (business process management) Process matrix/intelligence Information flow across the process Service life cycle management Service installation and deployment Service access management Service vision Service metamodel updates Update of service repository Identification of problem Product resolution and resource adjustment Service design, development, testing Functionality, interoperability and performance testing Service infrastructure management Web service server application servers and end-point services Hardware installation, monitoring, upgrade, planning and implementation. Network management content awareness networking Hardware and Software intermediaries Routers and firewalls Service Management (IT management) Middleware management ( IT management) Infrastructure management (IT management) Table 1 service management layers Composite application The activities performed in this layer have been stipulated in the figure below above. The activities in this layer start right from the testing of the system development life cycle. The analysis phase is the third step in the nitration process where analysis services and identification of the service list is done. There several activities on this layer such as service planning, service definition, service design and service implementation. Fug. 1 Application-Service Integration Management Process management Business process management refers to several tasks that an organization performs to maximize business processes and fit into the needs of the business environment. There are manual and automated tasks in business process management. There are several benefits of business process management such as productivity of the employees increase in the long run, operation cost is reduced because of aligning business processes with the goals of the organization. Many organization have mismatch of IT systems and the strategies of an organization. It is possible that with process management, enterprises reduce the mismatch of the requirements of the firm and the IT systems. Flexibility of an organization in its processes is another key benefit of process management in the service management layer. The cost of development of systems using high level and graphical language is reduced. This is because all the business requirements are documented. Fig 2 Business Process Management Service Business performance optimization Business performance maximization is a collection of several methodologies, best practices and technology infrastructure. This is the process of managing the events in a business. The business events include; cross multiple processes and relate tem to key performance indicators. Business optimization is done at all levels of an organization from levels. There should be optimization at the IT operational level same to business managers and the top management team. The process of aligning each department to the overall goal of the organization is done at this layer. Business activity monitoring This is another layer where business performance is enhanced. The process ensures that a organization also optimizes its performance by monitoring the business process. Through this process it is possible for an organization to look at different business events and come up with a single indicator of the performance of an organization. This process is important because it enables the top management to understand how the goals and strategies of each department are aligned to the global business strategy. There are measurements of the real time events and the key performance indicator. This gives an organization an advantage because through such tools they are able to predict the capabilities and identify patterns within the performance measure. This means that an organization makes informed decisions. Service management Service in many business process or sub process is a piece of software which is used in the entire business organization. It is composed of interface, implementation, contract and data. Runtime and design time are two major categories of service management activities of an enterprise. There are activities which operated in the runtime which cause design time activities to run. The design time activities are those that involve development and maintenance lifecycle. Service management normally focuses more on Registry, Repository, Metamodel, policy management and enforcement, and operational concepts of the service infrastructure. The activities of service management are illustrated in figure 3 below Fig 3 Service Management Activities Management transactional performance This is the layer where processes or transactions are managed end-to-end. The tasks of transactions performance management include; monitoring and management tools to deal with end-to-end services. Information availability on performance and availability metrics for each resource is also a management transaction performance task. Other tasks include the process of understanding what is service and decomposition of transactions based on specific metrics. Service middleware management The process of managing and monitoring middleware is done under service management. There are many middleware services such as; service registry, knowledge management, database management, web and application services. Service infrastructure management The following are the service activities in managing the service infrastructure; health check, management of the network, coming up we proper IT processes, Installing and upgrading hardware and ensuring that there is sharing of resources across the enterprise. Manage the operational systems This is another service which involves how health of the support service systems is and come up with methods of monitoring the health. There is the process of identifying the issues in the systems based on the problems of thread pool. IT Governance Governance is very different from management, governance is where a regulations and procedure under which management process operate. IT governance is where IT processes are maintained and guided. Challenges of service management layer There are some issues that service management layer faces. For instance it is hard to understand the relationship between different services and the IT infrastructure. Achieving the quality of service (QoS) is another challenging aspect of service management layer this is because each service offered by the layer should be monitored and be seen as a resource. There are also management mediations such as file logs, route and filter that make it difficult to control the flow of message in the service layer. The relationship between the services and the business process layer is not easy to understand. Conclusion Service performance layer identifies services and provides containers for the services which service as service houses. Each layer of the service management performs a distinct function to ensure that all is in order. Service management layer handles fault by alarm generation, fault correlation diagnostics Quality of Service management and address assignment and maintenance of group addresses.
