The hospital provides heart and lung transplant services to UK patients and the world at large. This is a specialist type of hospital allied to Cambridge Medical School University (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2013).

Founded in July 2004, the hospital deals with cardiothoracic surgery that involves transplants, respiratory medicine and cardiology. Its size is slightly huge that comprises of the major building that holds the ICU (intensive care unit), the surgical department and the cardiology section. Papworth Hospital also has the Chest Medical Unit that offers respiratory services (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2013). It is a Public NHS and has a tremendous relationship with the community due to its long service in the area.

Examination of the Organization The philosophy of Papworth Hospital promotes a positive approach to review and diagnosis, ensuring that the patient accesses medical care in the most suitable setting by the best personnel (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2013). This relates to team work from the staff who share work collectively for safe and effective clinical care. The hospital’s mission statement is to uphold its status as excellence center for diagnosis and treatment of patients. Papworth Hospital may be said to be a matrix organization as responsibilities are shared in the organization.

The board members are involved in decision making, patients and the public are also included in consultations (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2013). This form of communication explains the level of consultations within the organization.Strengths and Limitations Papworth Hospital seems to have issues with its internal control systems. This means that the governance process must be changed to improve the risk management systems as well as come up with a framework that will ensure that all stakeholders play their role efficiently (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2013).

Nonetheless, the hospital is keen to constantly review its reports what allows to control activities in the organization as well as achieve the set goals. The hospital has a culture of reviewing risks in relation to the quality standards; thus, quality service provision efficiently (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2013). Care Delivery System Papworth Hospital nursing care delivery system involves modern matrons that ensure cleanliness of the patient environment as well as support the nurses in the wards efficiently (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2014).

Social workers help in discharging patients and advice on the welfare benefits, counsel and provide emotional support to patients. Occupational staff are also available; they visit the wards, assess the patients and provide essential information to patients (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2014). This helps sustain the 12-hour Critical Care work shifts.Outcomes and Measurements Papworth Hospital constantly monitors the quality of service provided so as to have the best outcomes and measurements of its clinical performance.

First, in relation to nurse–sensitive clinical indicator, the hospital has a clear and effectual system of scrutinizing and correcting activities by the health practitioners that may seem objectionable (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2014). The hospital identifies the nature of the problem, how to correct the same, reevaluation after a certain time frame and an action plan to correct the problem. A system–wide outcome may involve checking the data samples collected in the course of surgical performance.

This includes the details of the patient and the surgeon who was in charge of the patient (Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 2014).
