Never take things for granted In our lives, we will come across a lot of opportunities, challenges, and regrets. It is very important that we never take things for granted and always be thankful for the gift of life and what life brings. In the book, Mitch Albom was so blessed to have a professor who taught him not just the lessons in the book but also those lessons in life. Morrie Schwartz was the best professor Mitch could ever ask for. He supplemented Mitch with the knowledge and advices in life that will surely help the young one in his future. Their relationship was more of a father and a son than a teacher and a student. When Mitch graduated, Morrie was more than proud of his achievement and he was very happy to see him graduate. During his graduation, Morrie embraced Mitch as he was even crying because he was so happy. He only had one wish from his beloved student and that is to keep in touch with even after leaving the school. Mitch promised to do so but he never kept his project. Only after Mitch came across his old professor in one of the television shows that he remembered he was not able to keep his promise and he missed to see professor Morrie for a long time. When he had the guts to see his professor, he drove to where he lives and after 16 long years, he saw his professor again, now seriously ill with ALS. Professor Morrie was already deteriorating and he was almost too late to see his professor. Despite the long years of waiting for his student, Morrie was still very happy to see Mitch. The two reunited and Mitch now seeks for his advice again regarding his life, his job and his family life. Morrie was very eager to see his student listens again to him. Mitch’s life was not perfect and his relationship with his wife is greatly affected by his work. Meeting up with Morrie every Tuesdays, Mitch now became more aware of he missed out chasing the life he thought was what’s best for him and his wife. He now finds himself wondering if he is realla happy with what he has and what he had become. He needed more time with his professor to enlighten him and answer his questions about life but he now has little time left with his professor. If only he chose to keep his promise and kept in touch with Morrie, he might be happier with his life. He may have chosen a different path with his life. But nevertheless, he had the chance to makeup with the time lost with his dear professor. This is one lesson that we need to consider in our life. We must not take for the granted the important people in our lives. Although they will be there to help us and love us, we must also reciprocate everything and let them feel our love. There will be a lot of opportunities that will come for us as we live, it is very important that we will not take others for granted as we embrace these opportunities. Make the most of your life In the book, not only did Mitch ditch his promise with Professor Morrie, he also keeps on failing his wife by not keeping his promise to her. Although he knew his wife will stick and wait for him every time he leaves for his job, he still barely spends time with her to check on her or make-up for his absence. His wife only asked for them to have a baby. And yet, for years they have been married, they still don’t have a baby. Time flies so fast and there is a great possibility that his wife will not become pregnant anymore. What will happen if this will be the case? We don’t need to wait as if we have all the time in the world, because we don’t. This is the reason why we should do things now and not later. We might regret everything if we will lose the chances we have. Whether we have years to live or just six months, it is very important that we make the most of our lives. We need to re-evaluate ourselves to see if we are really happy and contented with what we have. What have we not done yet? If we are not contented with our lives, what can make us feel fulfilled? We really don’t know how much time we have left in this world and now is the time that we should be able to do the things we wanted to do, spend time with the people we wanted to be with, and feel the feelings we long to feel. Now is the time to make amends to the people we hurt. Today is the time to settle all the misunderstanding that we have we the people who are important to us. Why should we wait? We don’t know if we still have tomorrow to do these things. If we have people we hurt in the past, then we go and apologize. If we have unsaid feelings, then we must find the people we long to tell the feelings. Life is too short to spend hating, keeping ourselves stressed with anger and hate. Life shouldn’t revolve around money and career We should live our lives around important aspects in life. We should live and love, unite and accept failures. In the book, Morrie encourages Mitch to reject the popular culture which is founded on greed, superficial needs and selfishness. According to Morrie, it is better that Mitch will create his own culture based on love, acceptance and ethical values. Money is very important in our lives as well as our career. Money supports our living, our basic needs and our wants. In order for us to generate money, we have to have a good career. These two are important factors to our lives that will determine fulfillment in life. There is nothing wrong aiming to become rich or have a high paying job. What makes it bad is the people and things we sacrificed for us to achieve this goal. It is very evident in our society that many wealthy people do not have healthy family relationship. It is because they are driven to earn more even if it means they have to be absent in their family’s lives. There are many birthdays, graduation, Christmas and New Year’s missed just doing their job. We must take note that money cannot really compensate for the absence. Do we want this kind of life? Do we want to become the father or mother our children do not recognize? Being in this kind of situation, we really have to make a choice and prioritize things. If we wanted to have a happy family, then we really have to ensure that we will be there for our family in good and bad times. We can have everything in order, it will just require us a little more efforts. After working, we can try to communicate with the members of the family. If we are tired then we can leave something for them to make them feel loved and let them understand why you work late. Family is the best support system a person could ever ask for. They will be there when you need them even during wee hours. They will never ask for anything in return for the things they do to you. They will never get tired of loving a person. All of these are true, given you are also doing your best to reciprocate and make-up for them. My own Professor Morrie Like Mitch, I also have my own Professor Morrie. My Philosophy teacher gives me the support and teaches me the things that will surely help me in my future. What we learn in our books will be used when we find the career that we wanted to do. But what we learn we learn with our teachers and experiences in school will be our guidance in our lives. Like Mitch, he used his talents and knowledge in his job but whatever Professor Morrie taught him helped him value his life. My philosophy teacher teaches me the essential lessons in life. I am just so grateful that I am one lucky student to have someone who cares for me and my future. Not all professors have the passion to teach students what life really is. Others just open and close their books during the class, but only a few will take time to get to know the students. To have someone care for you other than your family, loved ones and friends is something I consider a luck. This is because life in this world is full of people who will try to pull you down. But to have a teacher who you know will supplement you with the lessons in the book but also the essentials lessons in life is priceless. Read More
