Therefore, this paper explores the Niagara Falls as one of the tourist destinations in the country. Moreover, it identifies and describes the environment attractive features about the Niagara Falls and the Flower Pot Island. Besides, it focuses on the Niagara society, heritage resources, and the situation that made the site a tourist attraction. In addition, the paper addresses factors that affect tourism in the area as well as tourist activities in the region. It also explores the influence of tourism in the society, means of transport, accommodation, and the gastronomic experiences that are available for tourists. Lastly, it provides a brochure that is used in the promotion of the site. Natural features of Niagara Falls Niagara Falls is located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario (Berton 10-25). It is a combined name for American Falls, the adjacent Horseshoe Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls. The combination has the greatest waterfalls worldwide with the strongest flow rate. Moreover, Berton (10-25) says that the waterfall has a vertical drop of over 50meters, and it marks the global border between United State of new York, and the Ontario, the Canadian province. It also forms the southern part of the Niagara George. It is situated 75 miles south-southeast of Toronto and 17miles, and it lies between Niagara Falls in New York and the Niagara Falls in Ontario. The Niagara Falls has two main features, which are American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. These are amazing natural sites that attract numerous tourists around the globe. Horseshoe Falls is higher than the American Falls because the latter has boulders at its base. Studies demonstrate that the Niagara Falls was created as a result of the Wisconsin glaciations almost 10, 000 years ago. The two falls are the most attractive elements of the falls as tourists flock there throughout the year. Different views of the falls during the day and the night are breathtaking. Secondly, Mason (837-854) notes that the region has a natural feature called the Flower Pot Island. The island has high cliffs, numerous caves, meadows, glens, flowers, and strange rock formations surrounded by clear water. These features make the island a marvelous site that attracts many tourists. The island has an interesting history of the original three flowerpots, of which one fell in 1903. Because of the waves that pound on the limestone rocks, the seatbacks were formed to large shapes that look like flowerpots. In fact, the people around the area talk about the Flowerpots legend that explains how they came to be. Society of Niagara Falls According to Berton (10-25), the destination is located at the border of United States and Ontario, Canada. In Ontario, the region is occupied by people of the French-descent and the English or European descent. The Franco-Ontarians are about 5%. In the past two decades, the region is experiencing a high immigration rate; hence a large population growth (Berton 10-25). Some of the immigrants in Ontario include Asians, Caribbeans, Europeans, Africans, and Latin Americans. Moreover, Mason (837-854) says that the region has many visible minorities, with the aboriginal communities making 2% of the total population. This consists of one-third Métis and two-thirds north American Indians. The society also consists of people who love entertainment and culture. There is a tradition that started in 1829 about daredevils; people who jump from high towers to the gorge of the falls. Some people have also, in the past, gone over the falls on barrels and survived. Moreover, movie producers and music artists feature the spot in their productions. The falls also has other societies, such as, the Niagara Falls Humane society that takes care of the endangered animals like dogs and other pets (Berton 10-25). It is also noteworthy that the society that one finds at the destination is very hospitable. That explains why both domestic and foreign tourists flock in the area throughout the year. Heritage resources of Niagara Falls Just like any other tourist destination, Niagara Falls has some heritage resources that attract tourists to the area. Heritage resources are cultural and historical things that have been passed down from the old to the current generation (Blore, et al.13-20). In this tourist destination, one of the heritage resources is National Historic Site, which a small reserved area of historic importance. This is a governmental program that identifies and preserves some elements of the Canadian History. It was established in 1919 when the Commissioner of Dominion Parks, James B. Harkin persuaded the federal government to start an Advisory Board for Historic Site Preservation. Besides, the division of Parks Canada acknowledges important places, events and persons (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). All the titles are created by the Minister of Environment in collaboration with the Historic Sites and Monuments Board, and the public contribution. Moreover, Berton (10-25) notes that Niagara Falls has Fort George National Site of Canada as one of its heritage resources. This was built by the British in 1783 across Niagara River for protection of their interests in the Upper Canada. The fort was converted to be a headquarters of the local militia, British army, and Indian department in 1802. 1812 and 1814 saw the fort playing a vital role of determining the results of the serious war that broke out between the Upper Canada and the United States (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). Therefore, tourists get attracted to the site because of the curiosity and the need to learn more about the Canadian history. Fort Malden is another heritage resource that is found in southern Ontario. This is a historical feature that was built by the British along Detroit River banks in order to protect the Upper Canada from any attacks (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). It is said that they British demolished it when they were forced to go back, but rebuilt during the rebellion of Upper Canada between 1837 and 1839 (Berton 10-25). By 1921, the fort was acknowledged as a historic site and was taken as a park in 1937, where there are 1840 time earthwork, four buildings, and 1819 restored and renovated brick barracks. Tourists visit the place in order to learn the interesting history of the British Empire (Blore, et al.13-20). There are museums in which traditional and cultural objects of the old generations have been kept. These objects are vital in informing tourists about the ancient Canadian way of life. Circumstances making Niagara Falls a tourist centre Niagara Falls became a tourist center because of the numerous breathtaking natural and man-made features around the area. To start with, the destination has the American Falls as one of the attractive sites, the Horseshoe Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls (Berton 10-25). The combination of the three falls creates an amazing site, which people refer to as a wonder of nature. Moreover, the heritage resources that include historical sites also played an important role in making the place a tourist attraction center. In addition, Blore, et al. (13-20) says that the area has classic tourist hotels, motels, restaurants and hospitable community. Popular culture and entertainment also made the area a tourist attraction centre in that people could go watch daredevils jumping from the cliff to the gorge, and moving over the falls with barrels. The fact that the place has been featured in various movies and music has made people develop curiosity about the place. Consequently, Blore, et al. (13-20) asserts that many want to visit and experience the enjoyment and pleasure of watching water falling. Additionally, there are other services that include nature hikes, golfing, wine tours, and bike tours. History of Niagara Falls The origin of the falls’ name can be explained by different theories. According to a researcher called Bruce Trigger, the term Niagara was borrowed from the local Neutral Confederacy people called Niagagarega (Berton 10-25). On the other hand, George R. Stewart argues that it originates from a town in Iroquois called Ongniaahra. Some of the early explorers of the falls include Samuel de Champlain in 1604, Pehr Kalm in the 18th century, Louis Hennepin from Belgium, and Paul Ragueneau. Besides, Berton (10-25) postulates that tourism became popular in the 18th century and became the region’s major industry. Studies show that Napoleon Bonaparte and his bride visited the site, early 19th century. During the Caroline affair in 1837, a rebel ship called Caroline was burnt and thrown over the falls. Additionally, Prideaux and Cooper (17-30) notes that the falls were blocked by ice in 1848 and bridges were built thereafter due to demand to cross the falls. Therefore, with time, the falls was developed into a tourist attraction and a commercial area, in that it generated hydroelectric power. Factors affecting tourism in Niagara Falls Motivational factors Many tourists visit the area with different motives or needs to be met. Firstly, Fawcett and Cormack (686-704) argue that many tourists visiting the falls are motivated by recreational needs. People work tirelessly in their regions to achieve their personal or organizational objectives. Therefore, as a way of relaxing and rejuvenating themselves, they opt to visit spectacular places and participate in relaxing activities, such as, hiking, bike riding, boat riding, and swimming (Wall 291-315). Therefore, many find Niagara Falls as an ideal place to have fun before embarking on their tedious routines. Secondly, Berton (10-25) asserts that tourists visit Niagara Falls because of the need to witness and appreciate nature. In fact, the site is termed as one of the wonders of the world. Because of its beautiful site, the thunderous sound of falling water, and the cool breeze, people find it relaxing to watch and spent time there. Thirdly, Fawcett and Cormack (686-704) notes that young couples go there to have fun during their honeymoon and vacation in order to feel good and build their relationships. What is more, Prideaux and Cooper (17-30) say that other tourists visit Niagara Falls in order to temporarily escape from the reality. These include students or individuals who handle technical jobs; they find the site as the most appropriate place to play, hike, swim, bask, and ride bikes and boats. Additionally, Blore, et al. (13-20) says that those tourists who are curious about historical and cultural information visit the area to learn about the origin of the falls, and the museums in order to study the cultural aspects of the ancient generation of the area. Some also want to witness and learn more about the British Empire. Pull factors These are factors that are helpful in the stimulation of tourism product by attracting customers towards specific destination. These include services, accessibility, attractions, stability, proximity, image, and affordability (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). The site has the best and affordable services that pull tourists from different parts of the world. Besides, Jolliffe (307-322) says that the good image of the falls is influential in promoting the number of tourists in the area. This great image is brought about by the relaxing lifestyle and hospitable people. Moreover, Prideaux and Cooper (17-30) assert that the attractions offered by the Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veils Falls play a significant role in attracting tourists to the destination. There are also historical sites that are instrumental in pulling clients to the region throughout the year. Push factors These entail social, economic, technological, demographic and political forces, which trigger a demand for tourism by moving residents away for their common residential areas (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). The falls is frequently visited by Japanese, Europeans, New Zealanders, Australians, Koreans, and Americans. This is motivated by the advancing technology and modes of transport that have made the world a small place. Accommodation in Niagara Falls Tourists visiting the region have no problem with accommodation facilities because the area is well equipped with adequate, classic restaurants, motels, hotels, and shopping centers (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). Some of the hotels in the region include Sheraton Hotel, Niagara Falls Crowne Plaza Hotel, The Hampton Inn, and Skyline Inn. On the other hand, the restaurants include Fallsview Restaurant, The Rainbow Room by Massimo Capra, Rainforest Café, and Hard Rock Café. Transport in Niagara Falls Tourists wishing to visit Niagara Falls have adequate and reliable modes of transport at their disposal. Those traveling on land can use bus, cars and trains. Plummer, et al. (447-458) argues that some of the bus services include the Niagara Airbus and Safeway Tours. The location is linked by four global bridges to the US; Whirlpool, Queenston-Lewiston, Peace, and Rainbow bridges (Prideaux &Cooper 17-30). There are also air services that connect tourists from various airports to the falls (Berton 10-25). Besides, there are falls shuttles and tour buses that help ferry tourists to and fro the destination. Gastronomic experiences Besides attractions at Niagara Falls, there are gastronomic experiences that attract tourists to the area (Blore, et al.13-20). Some of them include the kind of food enjoyed by tourists; fresh lobster, crustaceans, Newfoundland berries, smoked meat in Montréal, eating ethnic in Ontario, eating organic food in Calgary, eating at Lake Louse hotel, eating along Wine route, eating Danish specialties, feasting local in Lotus Land, and eating Dim Sum in Chinatown Vancouver (Blore et al. 13-20). Therefore, tourists visit the area in order to enjoy these experiences Tourists’ activities at Niagara Falls According to Carmichael (185-204), tourists in the area participate in a number of activities, such as, hiking, sky diving, sightseeing, dining, cruises, shopping, riding bikes and boats, live shows, jet boat tours, day trips, helicopter tours, winery tours, Christmas tours, plays and theatre, and combo tours. Therefore, tourists keep streaming to the falls because of the fulfilling activities in which they participate. Impact of tourism in Niagara Falls society Here, tourism has both benefits and drawbacks on the immediate society. Some of the positive effects of tourism include boost of economic growth following transport, accommodation, and foreign exchange (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). Therefore, the country is able to further its development plans and provide the citizens with the best facilities ever. Moreover, there is an improved communication and transport system in the region. On the contrary, tourism has negatively influenced the traditional lifestyle of the Niagara society (Jolliffe 307-322). In addition, tourism has caused environmental concerns that include air and water pollution. Promoting Niagara Falls Tourism The destination is promoted in various ways that include the use of brochures, advertising, online social sites and websites, sale persons, personal selling, public relations, and exhibitions (Prideaux and Cooper 17-30). The destination has a number of agencies whose work is to promote the tourism of the destination. They also provide brochures, newsletters, magazines, newspapers, and television. Consequently, these promotion measures boost the destination’s image, and thus attract numerous tourists. Conclusion Niagara Falls is one of the best tourist destinations in Canada and worldwide. Some of its environmental features include the American, Horseshoe and Bridal Veil falls. Its heritage resources consist of the historical sites, such as, Fort George National Site of Canada and Fort Malden. Factors that are influential in attracting tourists to the area are push, pull and motivational factors. The falls have excellent accommodation and transport facilities. Besides, tourists in the area enjoy hiking, helicopter tours, and cruises, sightseeing, sky diving and winery tour. This tourism also has had positive and negative effects on the society.
