In case of nursing professionals, this factor holds even more importance because it not only improves the working relationship between the nursing staff but also improves the patient-nurse relationship which is essential for the provision of quality care to patients. The communication that takes place between two consecutive shifts of bedside nurses is known as ‘bedside nursing handoff’. The main objective of nursing handoffs is to make oncoming nurses aware of the present condition of the patient under care by providing them with all information about the present state of the patient. The nurses leaving the shift provide a handoff to the nurses taking charge at the end of each nursing shift. “It also allows the oncoming nurse an opportunity to visualize the patient and ask questions” (Maxson, Derby, Wrobleski, & Foss, 2012, p. 140). In the handoff, nurses inform the new in-charge nurses about the changes in patient’s progress level, as well as about the essentials that new nurses need to do for the patient during the shift. Nurses get information for preparing handoffs from the patient’s care plan, patient record, and other medical documents and present it to new nurses either through face-to-face communication or as taped handoffs. All of this relates to the concept of quality care nursing. However, the dilemma is that not every nurse is aware of the importance of bedside nursing; hence they do not participate actively in the preparation of a quality care plan. “Analysis of quality care literature reveals that practising nurses are rarely involved in developing or defining improvement programs for quality nursing care” (Burhans & Alligood, 2010, p. 1689). Delivery of quality care has always remained an area of debate in the field of nursing (Burhans & Alligood, 2010, p. 1689). Bedside nursing handoff is an essential part of a quality care plan about which every nursing professional should be trained. In some nursing facilities, nurses consult patients during preparation of handoffs in order to provide patient-centered care to patients. “Bedside handover provides an opportunity for patients to be involved as active participants in their care” (McMurray, Chaboyer, Wallis, Johnson, & Gehrke, 2011, p. 19). It is not the case that every nurse does this but this step is highly appreciated on the end of patients. The reason is that it plays a significant role in promoting safe and high quality care through higher levels of accuracy. The participation of patients in handover is considered to be one of the key aspects of an effective and patient-oriented quality care plan. Knowing the perspective of patients make nurses able to tailor their bedside handoffs in a way that they reflect patients needs and will (McMurray, Chaboyer, Wallis, Johnson, & Gehrke, 2011). The issue of bedside nursing handover is of significant importance in the field of nursing. Without handover, nurses are not able to offer flawless and safe medical care to patients because oncoming nurses always require some pertinent and reliable information to start doing their job properly. It is a type of clinical change that needs proper focus and attention of the bedside nurses. “A rapid change management cycle such as Transforming Care At the Bedside can be a useful process when implementing numerous clinical changes in short succession” (Chaboyer, Johnson, hardy, Gehrke, & Panuwatwanich, 2010, p. 1111). Transforming acre is a concept in which the front-line nurses, as well as the nurse leaders work side by side to ensure improvement in care provision level. The implication of bedside handovers cannot be neglected in any case because earlier observational studies and evidences from hospital wards and nursing facilities suggest that they play an exceptional role in the overall recovery procedure, promoting staff accountability, as well as in improving the patients’ satisfaction score (Maxson, Derby, Wrobleski, & Foss, 2012, p. 140). Bedside handoffs also improve the level of communication between nursing professionals and patients as the result of which not only the patient’s health progress level goes up but also the overall quality care plan improves. Bedside handoffs also prove useful for involving patients’ desires and concerns in the development of individual care plans. Patients become more satisfied because they know the person who is actually taking care of them, as well as the plan of care the nurses have adopted. One cannot deny the importance of bedside nursing handovers because in today’s settings, they have become an integral part of the nursing profession. They reflect a patient-centered approach and improve service delivery, accuracy, and patient-centered care (Chaboyer, McMurray, & Wallis, 2010, p. 27). Without such handoffs, nurses cannot ensure improvement in communication about medication and implementation of the patient safety care plan. Nursing handoffs save time of oncoming nurses and improve efficiency. The reason is that the oncoming nurses do not need to study each patient’s plan of care on their own. “Bedside reporting saves money, improves patient and nurse satisfaction, and is a more comprehensive approach to change-of-shift reporting” (Tidwell et al., 2011, p. E1). One of the key points that speak for the importance of beside handoffs is that they provide nurses with a chance to modify their plan of actions and care approach in accordance with the needs of the patients. Without such handoffs, improvement in the delivery of quality care cannot be made. The reason is that delivery of quality care needs some form of structured communication to take place between nurses. In case of lack of bedside handoffs presentation, such communication cannot take place. Not only this, moral distress among bedside nurses also increases as they have to start planning for healthcare delivery from the scratch. “Moral distress is a prominent problem for bedside nurses, and workable solutions for managing the toll it takes are needed” (Helft, Bledsoe, Hancock, & Wocial, 2009, p. 27). The improvement in the quality of patients’ treatment is hard to achieve without nursing handoffs. The reason is that bedside handovers make both nurses and patients involved in overall care delivery process. “Patient input reduces care fragmentation, miscommunication-related adverse events, readmissions, duplication of services and enhances satisfaction and continuity of care” (McMurray, Chaboyer, Wallis, & Fetherston, 2010, p. 2580). Patients communicate their concerns to the nurses considering which they prepare the plan of actions for the patients, write down the points about improvements in their personal diaries, and communicate information to the nurses taking charge. Doing this, not only the quality care approach of nursing professionals improves but also the patients become satisfied with the overall treatment process. Consequently, the patient satisfaction score goes high. Patients hold a very positive opinion about the use of bedside nursing handovers because they feel that bedside nursing improves the quality of care provision. Bedside nursing provides provide an opportunity to the patients to communicate their concerns to the staff in order to get the care plans prepared accordingly. Patients provide information about their health in a timely manner to the nursing professionals considering which the nurses design the care plans for the. Patients become active participants in their own plan of care development which is the most valued point regarding bedside handoffs for them. Not only this, handoffs also help the nursing staff to moving in the right direction by finding the right mix between the needs of the patients and the instructions of doctors. However, nurses need to use some standardized approach to develop bedside handoffs because an unjustified variation in this process can affect the delivery of quality care to patients. “The use of standardized protocols and communication tools for bedside handover improve continuity of patient care” (Street et al., 2011, p. 133). Along with a number of benefits of bedside nursing handoffs there also exist some challenges. For example, some nurses are not trained in doing proper documentation of the medical processes applied in any particular treatment due to which poor communication between staff occurs. Similarly, some nurses are not aware of the way to involve patients in the preparation of bedside handoffs. Some nurses are not trained in doing evidence-based practice. Prior researches have not properly highlighted these issues, as well as the ways to overcome these challenges. This research study is going to give a detailed insight into these issues along with discussing the role of bedside report in improving the patients’ satisfaction scores, which is the primary aim of the research. B – Problem Statement The problem statement for this research is: ‘There are many benefits and challenges in the right implementation of bedside nursing; therefore, steps need to be taken to overcome the associated challenges and reap maximum benefits’. The reason for performing a literature review on bedside nursing is to gain information from the existing credible sores about the importance and benefits of bedside nursing handovers in order to use that information in filling the gaps through a new study. This study proposes to (1) identify the benefits, as well as challenges associated with bedside nursing handoffs (2) determine the impact of bedside nursing handoffs on the patient satisfaction scores. Previous researches have been unable to give a deep insight into the factors that affect the proper presentation of handovers. Moreover, there is also less emphasis on the use of evidence-based practice in nursing facilities. Therefore, the goal will be to come up with some recommendations to bring improvements in the use of bedside nursing handovers. C – Evaluation of Resources The five resources or databases that I would use for my primary research include journal of advanced nursing, international journal of nursing practice, journal of critical nursing, journal of neuroscience nursing, and journal of professional nursing. These journals accept articles from the areas of educational research, higher degree nursing education, and field observations. All articles included in these databases are credible and are written in proper formats. These databases include all articles that a person needs to gain information about any particular area of nursing whether it is related to some existing nursing issue or an ongoing issue. The credibility of these resources for this study’s research topic lies in the fact that these resources have stored a complete range of well-researched primary research articles that the researcher needs to use for getting the required information. The researcher needs to use the evidence-based research to support the literature review. These resources have the amount of articles the researcher needs to use as evidence in the literature review. Therefore, these resources or databases hold extreme importance for the researcher to conduct research on the importance of bedside reports in improving the patient satisfaction scores. In this article, the authors have talked about the importance of developing effective nursing strategies to improve nursing care quality and raise the level of patient satisfaction. The authors have researched the nurses of medical or surgical adult units. Through the research, they found that those nurses who adopted the quality care system in their nursing approach were able to develop empathy and respectful interactions with patients. The authors conclude that nurse managers hold the responsibility to develop quality care strategies. The article links with the subject area of my research in that it talks about the quality care system and the factors that create it. The article has enough information that I would like to use in my research. In this article, the authors have talked about the patient outcomes as the result of transforming care strategies. It has been found that through transforming care strategies, some significant reductions in pressure ulcers and medication errors can be brought. The authors have stressed on the importance of bedside transforming care in implementing clinical changes. The overall structure of the article is good enough to facilitate readers in extracting required information. In the article, change management cycle has been described as a valuable process in improving the patient care system. The article links to my research area in that it talks about the use of strategic care, which is another aspect of bedside nursing care, in improving the patient-client interactions. In this article, the authors have talked about the ways to improve the flow of communication between patients and nurses, as well as to improve the processes for managing patients and visitors. This article suits the most with my research area in that it also talks about the importance of bedside nursing handovers in improving patient care, which is the key objective of every healthcare provider. The main point of the article is that bedside nursing plays a significant role in improving patients’ satisfaction level. This article also links well to my research area as it talks about what patients feel about bedside nursing. The information included in this article can be used to build discussion on the ways to improve patient satisfaction. In this article, the authors have talked about delirium which is acute central nervous system disorder. This medical problem is associated mainly with people admitted in intensive care unit and requires special care. The authors conducted an observational study in a 12-bed intensive care unit to find whether bedside nursing can be helpful in detecting delirium or not. After comparing the results with an independent assessment performed by a nurse using Confusion Assessment Method, it was found that routine bedside nursing was unable to detect delirium in seriously ill patients. The information included in this article would help me provide a deviating perspective regarding the use of bedside nursing handovers in dealing with patient related issues. In this article, the authors have talked about the effects of bedside communication on patient care. Communication is always helpful in improving the relationship between any two people and in case of patient and nurse, its importance becomes even stronger. After conducting and analyzing a cross-sectional survey of 259 nurses, it was found that standardized bedside nursing improves patients’ involvement in care. However, there exist differences in the location, method, and duration of handover between full-time and part-time nurses. Through the research, it was also found that standardized protocols and communication tools improve delivery of patient care. This article is closely related to my subject of research as it talks about the effectiveness of bedside nursing in improving the level of patient care. In this article, the authors have stressed on the significance of bedside reporting on the satisfaction of patients and nurses. It has been found through research that bedside reporting improves the satisfaction levels of patients, nurses, and families if implemented with proper monitoring and strategic mindset. It has also been found that bedside reporting improves satisfaction and saves money. The article relates to my research area in that it talks about the effectiveness of bedside nursing handover implementation in improving improve patient care and patient-nurse interaction. The article has enough information that can be used in any research based on finding the relationship between bedside using handovers in improving patient satisfaction scores. E - Results of Original Search Strategy The results of the original search strategy were very good as it helped me find the required number of articles relevant with my subject area. I used Google Scholar to find the sources. I typed three to four key words to refine my research. For example, I used ‘Bedside Nursing’ and ‘Patient Satisfaction’ as two main key words to retrieve the articles that I needed for this research. Next, I customized the publication years search for the research articles because the requirement was to use most recent articles in nursing field. The maximum limit was 5 years old articles. Therefore, I typed 2009 in the publication year field and the Google Scholar retrieved all articles that have been published from 2009 till 2014. How Search Strategy Could Have Been Improved? I think I could have brought a minor improvement to my search strategy by finding the primary research articles in the nursing databases. The reason is that nursing databases include all articles that have been published so far related to any particular field of nursing which would have saved my time and efforts. However, I would say that overall sear4ch strategy that I adopted was good as it provided me with the results I wanted. F - Major Points of the Research The research articles that I used for the research had some similar and a very few dissimilar points in them. Given below is the summary of the points that were similar to each other: Effective nursing strategies can improve nursing care quality. They can also raise the level of patient satisfaction. Bedside transforming care plays a significant role in implementing clinical changes. Nurses should make use of patient-centered approach can be helpful in improving the trust in patients on health providers. In this regard, the role of bedside nursing handovers is incredible in promoting patient satisfaction and staff accountability. They also improve the level of patient-nurse interaction. Similarly, standardized protocols and communication tools can also be used to improve patient care delivery. G - Best Practice Recommendation The best practice in nursing for bedside handovers to improve patient satisfaction is to make use of a patient-centered approach. Patient-centered approach helps nurses in making patients participate actively in the process of health management (McMurray, Chaboyer, Wallis, Johnson, & Gehrke, 2011, p. 19). Use of bedside nursing handovers should be based on the perspectives and needs of patients because it will help nurses in tailoring their work approach accordingly (Chaboyer, McMurray, & Wallis, 2010). This way the patient satisfaction level will definitely reach the high end. H - Gaps in Knowledge Based on the literature review, the gaps that I have found in knowledge on the use of bedside nursing to improve satisfaction scores are there in the area of challenges that some nursing professionals face in successful presentation of bedside handovers. Some nurses cannot do proper documentation of the medical processes that they need to apply in a patient’s treatment. This often results in poor communication with the nursing staff, information lost, and presentation of incomplete information to the oncoming nurses. Similarly, some nurses do not know the way they should involve patients in the implementation of nursing handover. The knowledge in these areas is limited; hence there are few gaps that need to be filled through research. I - Culture of Inquiry and Evidence-Based Practice Evidence-based practice is imperative in the field of nursing. However, there exist some challenges that need to be met effectively in order to reap the benefits of evidence-based practice. As a nursing leader, I hold the responsibility to create an environment of evidence-based practice and a culture of inquiry in the workplace. I would do this by making evidence-based practice a part of the nurse training program. I would implement the evidence-based practice competency as an essential part of staff requirements. I would also encourage my nursing staff to search databases from the intranet of the hospital to conduct their searches.
