? My Personality Traits Jose Vergara School: Management Resource Institute Mary Ruiz ENC 1101 My Personality Traits Like other human beings, I have personality traits that define my emotion, attitude, thoughts, and patterns of behavior. While some of my personality traits are inherent, others have developed in me over time due to my upbringing and socialization process. The family and religious background, schooling and peers have in one way or another contributed to some of the personality traits that I posses at the moment. My personality traits have significantly influenced how people perceive me, as well as the interaction between others and me. Besides, it has greatly shaped the way in which I perceive things in life and it has shaped the direction and decisions that I have taken in life. In this paper, I will discuss my personality traits, the way in which they came about and why I consider them important in my life. One of my main personality traits is honesty. I greatly regard this trait and I consider it very important in my life, particularly in shaping the decisions that I make and the way in which I relate with others. John, Robins and Pervin (2008) refer to honesty as a trait that connotes virtuous and positive attributes such as straightforwardness and truthfulness. It goes along with the ability to desist from lying, theft, or cheating. To me, honesty is not only the best policy but also the only policy. This trait developed in my life because of our family values and religious belief. I was brought up in a highly religious family and both my parents demanded that we should be honest in everything that we do and say. In addition, this value was cemented through religious teachings during childhood and I grew up knowing that I should exercise honesty at all times. Moreover, I severally suffered the negative consequences of being dishonest when I was a child and as a result, I vowed to be honest no matter the consequences. Adaptability and compatibility is my other main personality traits. I consider them important because they help me to get along with others. Adaptability is particularly important as it helps me to act in a way that befits a particular situation, whether am accustomed to it or not. As such, it helps mitigate the possible negative consequences that may arise in unfamiliar conditions and situations (Matthews, Deary and Whiteman, 2003). This trait helps me not to fall apart when faced with adversity and change. Related to adaptability is compatibility that enables me to have a successful relationship with others. I must admit that this trait does not happen in my life in isolation – other traits such as honesty and good communication play a critical role in it. While compatibility is often founded on social attributes, am always determined to make anyone around me to feel comfortable. I do this by trying to be understanding and making people around me feel at ease. In today’s challenging times, I consider these traits important in navigating the challenges. I also have the drive to keep going, in addition to being compassionate and understanding. The drive to keep me going helps me to keep working towards realizing my dreams despite the adversities and challenges that may come my way. I know that what I want to achieve eventually is greater than the efforts required at the moment, as well as the challenges that I need to overcome. Besides, I have compassion – I always find myself empathizing with those who are suffering (John, Robins and Pervin, 2008). I consider this trait very important because it is the foundation of a greater human interconnection. I derive satisfaction in helping others overcome their suffering or at least reduce their suffering. Being understanding is my other chief personality trait. As has already been noted, certain traits like adaptability and compatibility are founded on other traits such as understanding. It is on this basis that I consider being understanding as my key personality trait because it is the cornerstone to some of my other traits. I am able to think about a situation, message, or person and sufficiently and appropriately deal with them. I have the disposition and ability in regard to certain situations and people and how to deal with them appropriately. Furthermore, I consider patience as my other main personality trait. Matthews, Deary and Whiteman (2003) define patience as the ability to exhibit perseverance or endurance especially when under strain or in the face of long-term difficulties. I have a great level of endurance particularly under difficult situations; I am able to persevere in the face of provocation or delay without behaving or acting on anger or annoyance in a way that is negative. This trait has developed in me over time. I must admit that when I was young I used to portray some impatient tendencies but this has changed over the years, as I grow older. Now I can confidently say that my character is more steadfast and I rarely demonstrate impatience and hastiness. I cannot fail to mention optimism as one of my other personality traits. I often strive to have a positive outlook regarding various situations in life. In other words, I have a worldview or mental attitude that interprets events and circumstances as being positive and the best (Matthews, Deary and Whiteman, 2003). I always have the hope that future conditions will be better and that all the unfolding events will eventually culminate to better conditions and circumstances. In conclusion, it is evidently clear from the above discussion that I have personality traits that are nearly similar in one way or another and they complement one another. Each of the traits tends to complement the other traits and enforce them in a way that makes me a better human being. As has been noted, my main traits can be summarized to include honesty, adaptability and compatibility, having the drive to keep going, being compassionate, and possessing understanding, patience, and optimism. These traits significantly define my emotion, attitude, thoughts, and patterns of behavior. I am striving to embed them in my daily life and acquire other traits that will make me a better person and help me realize my aspirations. References John, O. P., Robins, R. W., & Pervin, L. A.
